You Never Know What Covid 19 Exactly is Till You Confront

We have been listening about Covid 19 since Dec.2019 and we saw the total system paralyzed in March 2020 when all of a sudden, lockdown was announced. Initially, it was taken as a temporary phase with a feeling – It shall pass soon. The fact was quite far off because lockdown was being extended with more new implementations and one day, it made us realize that this year 2020 is going tough on all of us and the future seemed bleak.

Man love to plan and chalk programs ahead of time but this year, nothing of that sort was working.

I stuck to the lockdown rules and did not breach them till lockdown came to an end and for the first time in the last week of Oct last, I traveled by air from Ahmedabad to Patna in fear of being inflicted with Covid. Followed the decorum religiously n finally, I was back to my destination after more than 10 months. Even followed the home isolation rule of 14 days and was relaxed, finding myself sound and healthy…I pinched myself.

On 3rd of Dec, my elder son developed fever and we got the RT-PCR test done for him and to my utter dismay, it came out POSITIVE.

All of us present in the house got antigen tests done at 9:30 pm. I knew that this test was not foolproof still we went for it and all were negative. I made arrangements for my son home isolation and consulted the doctor via video conferencing and the prescribed medicines were started and a whole list of Do’s & Don’ts was confirmed by the doctor for the patient to follow.

The whole night, I changed my sides and sleep was far off from me. The next morning, the rest of the people started feeling feverish and unwell, therefore, again the lab person was called for RT-PCR and this time, I was only negative.

My anxiety rose and I felt helpless but I was contended that the symptoms were not so remarkable, therefore, situation was under control.

Did not know that nightmare was arriving in no time and within a span of 48 hours, the symptoms of my elder son were conspicuous and I had to take the decision to shift to the hospital because oxygen level was dipping, breathlessness was apparent and persistent fever nearing 105 degree Fahrenheit.

My heart started pounding and that day, I understood that it is a tough time for a mother to watch her child suffering and with Covid, the treatment is being carried on some hypotheses and there is no certainty, how the situation will unfold.

I controlled my emotions and took him to the designated Covid hospital and he was put on oxygen. The next seven days were tough and the infection could be seen on other multiple organs due to Covid. Vaccines were required to control the impact of Covid but liver infection was alarming and therefore, he was still on tablets.

His oxygen requirement was 15 to 18 litre oxygen and his condition was critical for seven days.

Rest people at home were manageable and after ten days, I too developed Covid symptoms and tested positive. Now, it was my turn to isolate myself and my younger son took the reins in his hands to manage all.

Anxiety was for my elder son and my prayers were listened. After seven days, he recouped and the recovery was much faster than expected and he was released after nine days of hospitalization…indeed, it was a miracle and I was much relieved though fear of post Covid impact was making me nervous.

I wish to say one thing to everyone through my post that “Don’t Underestimate Covid Pandemic.” It is a dreading experience and only the person who faces knows the reality of Covid’s impact.

We all came out safely after 21 days of isolation and we could see each other in person and tears welled up after meeting after a long gap.

One should not ignore the wrath of Covid 19 and follow the rules to prevent though you cannot rule the source of infection. It is indeed a tough phase and the person who goes through only knows the reality.

Symptoms of Covid 19

  • High Fever
  • Breathlessness
  • Hallucination
  • Loss of Appetite, and Taste
  • Loose Motion

What you require if you are Covid Positive

  • Oximeter
  • Thermometer
  • Steamer
  • Prescribed Medicines
  • Separate Room & Bathroom
  • Separate Utensils
  • Healthy Diet
  • Plenty of Fluids prefer hot fluids

Being highly infectious, the patient has to remain in perfect isolation till the report is negative and has to maintain no-contact with anyone.

Financially Sound

You need a good sum for the treatment in home isolation and a major sum is required for hospitalization. There are options of Covid coverage in maximum health insurance, so, please register yourself after understanding all the clauses of Covid insurance so that you don’t burn holes in your pocket, in case of Covid attack.

Medications, blood tests and CT-Scan is dearer and the patient things cannot be shared with anyone, hence, you need to buy everything separate or allocate separate things for the patient.

Word of Advice

Don’t fall deaf if someone advises you for Covid 19 precautions because, the experience of patients are dreading because of multiple symptoms due to Covid and the challenges to manage alone because you are cut –off from everyone for minimum of 14 days and it is a tough to handle yourself in high temperature, waning taste buds and much more.

Till now, we have known that in illness, you have your near and dear ones beside but Covid makes you live alone in trying times and a fear lingers, “What next might follow?”

So, please don’t take it lightly, use masks, sanitize yourself and your surroundings, and maintain physical distancing. Instead of socializing, engage yourself in hobbies so that you can alleviate your mood and feel pleasant.

We are still fighting with weakness, impact of Post-Covid.

What I did in Home Isolation

  • Chanted Mantras
  • Spiritually inclined for the safety of my Family Wellness
  • Did paintings on old stuff that was available in my room
  • Took great care of my plants on my balcony

I completely agree with you Ila. One you experiences it only knows how serious it is. I have seen people treating it like normal fever and they very lightly say – it will come and go. But they dint realize what happens when it comes.

Getting afflicted with COVID can be scary because we dont know which one of us will become serious enought to be admitted in the hospital or need oxygen. Only good thing is people with diabetes, blood pressure and old age can be isolated but rest of us are sitting ducks. Glad your ordeal got over with positive news.

Hope you and your all family members are doing well now. I can relate with your situation Ila. My whole family in India went through the scary experience of COVID-19. And I am totally agree on this that one can only understands the dreadful situation, once he/she confronts it. Best thing is that you all came out as a winner at the end and that matters the most.

Glad to know you and your family are okay now. People are still taking Covid lightly and fail to realize the long term impact. It is those that have been affected who truly realize the gravity of it.

Glad to know Ila tha you all are doing okay now and I agree, the one who have faced it knows how dangerous it is… The school where I work as a counsellor has started too, although measures are taken I am worried about covid…

Really glad that you have come out of it unscathed. I know the mental trauma you have gone through. We should not take the pandemic lightly but now I see people have given up and not following the protocol or social distancing. My sister and her whole family had it and I was so worried about her. My niece and her family, with kids, even a two year old was suffering. I pray that the pandemic ends soon and lets us all live in peace.

This is such a comprehensive write-up. You have laid out all the details so well. Hope you are doing fine now and emerge back stronger!

I totally relate to your problem. My entire family also had covid and the situation for that one month was so tensed and I had severe anxiety but thankfully, by god’s grace everyone recovered well. Though we are still battling with the weakness and side effects.

I hope you and your family is doing fine now, I can relate to you here. There have been all the theories about COVID and tips and stuffs, building stories. But the ones who go through it only knows the struggle, mental stress and other constraints. I am glad you utilised your time in spirituality and with your plants. Take good care.

So glad that all of you recovered and are well. My husband and I have been volunteering as COVID warriors since last April and I can relate so much to the anxieties based on first hand interactions with the patients. The important thing is to catch it in the beginning and take necessary treatments. Complete recovery rates are much better then. We should not underestimate the power of a simple face mask – it helps a lot to be masked up in public and sanitize your hand frequently. I see so many ‘covidiots’ who think nothing will happen to them and go about flouting norms, risking their health and those of other as well as they could be asymptomatic carriers.

Thanks for sharing your experience. This post is an eye opener for people who are still taking COVID lightly. Yes taking precautions can save many lives. In times like these we should act responsibly.

I am happy that you all are safe. This post is like a great piece of advice that is directly from your heart. I will take care of all those precautions which you have instructed. I hope that the vaccine will work well and we all get relief from this horrible virus.
Stay blessed

Thanks for sharing your experience through this post. It’s tough for a mother to see her child in any problem. In covid cases one can’t be beside the patient. Glad to know everything worked out fine in your case. Vaccines are there but still we have to follow all precautions. The do’s and don’t s mentioned are going to help .

Wishing you all good health and safety in coming times. take care and keep yourself busy in mantra and paintings as I too feel they are the best ways to keep us occupied when we have time and keep us feeling happy and hopeful too.

Omg! It is indeed scary to read your experience. It is true that the person who undergoes something can only feel its pinch. With Covid-19 becoming a nightmarish experience, one should always take the necessary precautions. It is sad to see people getting relaxed and venture out without masks.
