I am always confused when there is a controversy over dress code in any institution or for an event. Uniform dress signals a certain sense of discipline, and as you have said, a "oneness". In some IT companies, the dress code is "you shoulod be clothed". Nothing wrong with that too. Very often, how one should be dressed depends on the situation.
